Technical Notes; 3/12/2018



I need to begin writing my UCAS personal statement, I will do this over the weekend -  I have been focussing on class work this past week which has definitely increased my output as opposed to worrying about my BA application. However, it is time to spend do some reflecting on my Foundation so far and decide on which courses I am applying for based on what I want to do and which course would best suit what I want to explore. Specifically my public art has been the most enjoyable project thus far as I spent extra time trying to improve the project and I feel that I did this successfully, I want to improve this project further by doing some more development sheets as well as a clean and detailed fashion illustration.


Some notes I made during this morning's Critique:

The Criteria was very helpful in directing my focus for my portfolio sheets, I feel I am taking what is not necessarily my best work but turning it in to something I could use in my portfolio. I decided to focus on my neighborhood project given that this is weaker objectively speaking than my public art on all fronts I would say. I thought that working on this project and curating my sketchbook work was a positive exercise, it shows me how to use a sketchbook further as I can understand how my sketchbook work feeds in to a portfolio; I understand now that while I am considering layout in my sketchbook It is allowed to go off on tangents especially during the research phase as I can later edit and curate these, select the aspects that I ended up developing further and create a visual narrative based on this.


We talked about narrative when critiquing my work, I was very drawn to Morgan's approach I think that his use of paper compliments his narrative as well as his approach to using his research imagery alongside design drawing and mark making, including textile sampling as well in response to research imagery - these are vital for a project's success with regards to conveying mood and narrative effectively. I think that a checklist would help me before starting my lanyard project, of all the things that are necessary - I want to go 3D as soon as possible as I enjoy this approach, it 'greases' the wheels for later development.


Sara's feedback today was unfortunately mostly negative, she said that my drawings lacked an 'aesthetic' or style. She pointed out other people's work that she felt did have a clear aesthetic and style. I am yet to figure out or decide what my style is, I do evidence many different approaches to drawing and different ways of observing and developing through collage/ 3D so it makes sense to me why there is not a clear aesthetic at this stage.


Given that my work is lacking with regards to a clear aesthetic, I am going to look at artists that I like and try out many styles in quick succession, then pick my favourite and continue to use this for my development sheets.


I decided to take a life drawing class last Tuesday, I decided to try this again tonight especially given how critical Sara was of my design development sheets. She said these were very 'rigid' also, I thought that the main function of the development sheet was to convey the design and be informative, especially with regards to functional details; I thought that making the figure consistent as well as very minimal was the best approach - this was in contrast to some of the work that Sara was praising. I like this approach and will try to actualise it more concretely for my development sheets.
